How Lifestyle Can Shape a Person’s Personal Identity

A person’s lifestyle is defined as a set of values, attitudes, behaviours and cultural orientations that shape their personal identity. Adler’s 1929 book, The Case of Miss R, introduced the concept of lifestyle, defining it as a person’s basic character that is established during childhood. While the term can be applied to a wide range of subjects, there are some distinct differences between individuals. Below are some examples of how lifestyle can shape a person’s personality.
A lifestyle is a characteristic or way of living of an individual. There are a number of factors that shape a person’s lifestyle, including genetic endowment, upbringing, and attitudes. According to Adler, “Lifestyle is a compensation for inadequacy in one’s personality.” Social media make it possible for people to express themselves freely on a vast array of platforms. Despite the varying definitions of lifestyle, the concept is widely accepted as a characteristic of a group.
A person’s lifestyle depends on a number of factors. The type of environment in which they live and work affects the type of lifestyle they lead. The rural versus the urban environment yields different results. While both environments influence lifestyle, living in a suburban setting may result in a different life style than a suburban one. Therefore, a person’s lifestyle should be influenced by the environment in which he or she lives.
